Information for prospective students

Thank you for your interest in working with us.  We are always looking for exceptional students. We know it can be difficult to choose a university, program, advisor, and research project. We hope that the following information will be helpful in making your decision. If you are interested in working with the Landscape Land Use Change Institute, it is important to discuss your research interest with either Kirsten de Beurs at the University of Oklahoma or Jason Julian at Texas State University before submitting an graduate student application.

The University of Oklahoma, Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability: 
The Geography and Environmental Sustainability department at OU is part of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences. OU is located in Norman (OK) just south of Oklahoma City. Norman is an average size town established in 1889 with a current population of about 111,000 (about 25,000 college students). The Carnegie Foundation classifies OU as a research university with “very high research activity”.

Admission Requirements:
The University of Oklahoma offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Geography. Students in the Department’s M.A. and Ph.D. programs are formally students in the University of Oklahoma’s Graduate College and must comply with all requirements, policies, and procedures of the Graduate College. In order to qualify for admission to the M.A. or Ph.D. programs in Geography, all prospective students must meet and comply with all of the admission requirements of the University of Oklahoma’s Graduate College.

In addition to applying to the Graduate College, applicants must submit the following directly to the Department:
1) The Department’s graduate application form
2) A statement of interest in which the applicant describes his or her interests and goals, showing how these interests and goals are related to current faculty expertise.
3) Two letters of recommendation from professors with whom the applicant has worked previously. These letters should be submitted to the Department using the letter of recommendation form.
